Glass Beach

Talk about having one of the weirdest but the coolest beach. I could help you with that. Think about a beach with sea glass as a carpet. Yup, it’s the Glass Beach , California.

The pounding surf has literally smoothened out man’s mistake. It’s said that, in 1949 people from the town would come there and dump their trash. A lot of it would be the glass back then. In 1967, the North Coast Water Quality Board realised that they were responsible to tell the people not to dump their crap on a beach, and successfully stopped the waste being dumped there. They did obviously built a dump land somewhere far, but whatever.

So this Beach now, located about three-hour’s drive north of San Francisco, after 50 years has become a tourist destination and a state park because of the glistening balls of glass that lie there on the beach, in serenity.

And the beach is covered with stone-sized pieces of sea glass, coloring the seascape and adding a tourist element to the natural beauty of the spot

Sea glass is a result of both nature and man. Jars, bottles and glass carelessly sloughed off are tumbled by the water of the ocean to form these colorful precious gems of the shore

The glass was said to be “Mermaid Tears”. It was said that every time a sailor drowned at sea, the Mermaids would cry and the sea glass were their tears washing up on the shore

It is also said that it takes about 7-10 years in a constant surf environment for the sea glass to ‘become’ a sea glass

The value of a sea glass is partially determined by its colour. This is because there were very few glass items that were made in a particular colour that were unique. A quality piece of sea glass has no shiny spots. It is well frosted and has smooth, tactile edges

Incredibly, the rarest of sea glasses has inclusions (Can you see the things inside the glass which was garbage once)

Glass Beach

There are three main sites in Fort Bragg. You can walk to two glass beaches from Downtown Fort Bragg, but the third requires a trip by a kayak.
